Large orthodox icon depicting Mother of God Odigitria of Smolensk, Russia, early 19th century

Tempera on panel
Height x width x depth: 84 x 63.5 x 3.5 cm.

The Virgin of Smolensk belongs to the fundamental type of depiction of the Virgin Odigitria, understood as ‘She who shows the way’ of which she is perhaps the most widespread and popular type in Russia
The Virgin retains the solemnity that characterises the canon of the Virgin Odigitria, she is presented frontally with her head gently inclined towards her son, seated on her left arm, her left hand outstretched towards Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is represented by a child-like figure but with adult features and attitudes, blessing with his right hand and holding a scroll with the divine law in his left hand.

Item condition grading: *** fair, colour falls and previous restoration.
